Orlando, Cocoa Beach, and Daytona area fishing report by Captain Jim Ross of Fineline Fishing Charters

The Mullet run is on in the Cocoa Beach area due east of Orlando right now. These prized baitfish are the main food source for all of our Banana, Indian River, and Mosquito Lagoon redfish and speckled trout. My recent fishing trips have usually been successful for both of these species on most days. The speckled trout are striking topwater plugs like the Rapala Skitterwalk on most mornings in the Indian River Lagoon right now. The waters of the Banana River Lagoon near Cocoa Beach are holding slot sized (18 to 27 inch- 2 to 7 pound class) redfish. These redfish are striking Saltwater Assassin 4-inch sea shad rigged on 1/8 to ¼ ounce Saltwater Assassin jig head. The two main colors that we have been using for the redfish are “Pink Ghosts” and “Albino Ghosts” when fishing near docks or other structures that the redfish are relating to in the Cocoa Beach area. These two types of lures imitate the mullet that I mentioned are in the Orlando area lagoon waters at this time. The beaches from the Daytona area southward to the Cocoa Beach area will continue to have huge schools of these fish moving through this area over the next month. This is the time of year when all of the predators put on their “feed bags” and gorge themselves on these mullet. When the bite turns on, anglers fishing with me outside of the Cocoa Beach area can expect to hook as many as 30 or 40 fish per person on these types of trips. Often bluefish, ladyfish, jack, flounder, tarpon, shark, and other types of predators will also get involved in the “feeding frenzy”. It a great time to book a fishing trip with me if your going to be in the Orlando, Daytona, or Cocoa Beach area any time soon.
