At this time of the year the fishing season slows here in the Orlando, Cocoa Beach, and Daytona Beach areas. Everyone is busy with the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, and I only seem to get out about two to three days per week with clients. This is OK, because I need some time off the water as well. I like to go hunting near Orlando for wild boar and west of Cocoa Beach for deer with my compound bow or rifle. Because of this the fish in our local lagoons get a small window when they are somewhat safe from me and my charter fishing clients that are visiting this area. Unfortunately, this year the deer and hog have been safe too, because I have not found any to shoot yet, but I still enjoy my time in the woods.
Many of the fish that we catch at this time of the year in the Indian River east of Orlando are hitting cut baits. I usually net or catch silver mullet and use them, but I like to use artificial lures better on most trips, because we can cover more water with them. The artificial jigs tail that are made by Saltwater Assassin seem to be one of the better options when the fish are striking lures. From now until just after the new year, I’ll be concentrating on two bodies of water in particular. The first is an area that fisherman from around the world have heard of- the Mosquito Lagoon. This lagoon is about 35 minutes south of Daytona Beach. The other fantastic fishing destination that I frequent with my charter fishing clients is the Banana River Lagoon located close to Cocoa Beach. Both of these bodies of water are with an hours drive of the Orlando area, and we can fish either of these regardless of wind direction. The Indian River lagoon located due East of the Orlando area is a great fishing destination, but it usually has the best fishing in January and February. That is when the bite gets really good. Speckled trout and redfish eat almost anything that we present to them on most days in those two months. The fishing in the winter months in the Daytona and Orlando Areas is chilly by our standards. Most mornings are in the 40’s and the afternoons usually see mid 60 degree readings. In the Cocoa Beach area you add a few degrees on most day as it located farther to the south than Daytona Beach and is usually warmer. If you have not experience winter fishing in the Orlando area you should do what many of my regular winter clients from New York, Maine, Wisconsin, Ohio, and other northern states do-give me a call and come on down. It’s a whole lot warmer than it is up there, and the fishing is usually extremely good.
