Fishing report 02-19-18 by Captain Jim Ross

Black drum have invaded the upper Indian River Lagoon between Daytona and Cocoa Beach near the town of Titusville over the past two weeks.  Schooling activity has been very good as these fish gather to spawn in the warming waters of this portion of the estuary.  Many of these fish are running 20 to 40 pounds, and when you group 50 to 100 fish together in a school, they become very competitive and strike our live shrimp offerings on most days.  Redfish and trout action hasn’t been as good this month, so I have been mainly concentrating on these large drum for my charter fishing clients.   We have also seen some cobia and tripletail along the near coastal waters outside of Port Canaveral and Sebastian inlet this past week.  Many of these fish are holding on color changes less than a mile from the beach.  The cobia are also following manta rays as they feed in our nearshore waters south of Cocoa Beach.  I’m looking forward to a great spring fishery and if the weather continues to cooperate it looks like we are going to have a great ending to February and beginning of March this year.
