30 Jan Orlando and Cococa Beach area charter fishing 4-cast for February 2019
PORT CANAVERAL EAST OF ORLANDO
The fishing outside of Port Canaveral 45 minute due east of Orlando will be very dependent on the water temperatures this month. If we have typical winter weather our anglers can expect to catch weakfish, pompano, whiting, and sheepshead and maybe a few jack and bluefish thrown in for good measure. A few of these species will provide good eating fillets in exchange for soaking a piece of shrimp on the bottom. The others will provide plenty of sport for anglers coming to the Orlando and Cocoa Beach areas to fish with us. Weakfish are another visitor to these waters each winter. The main shipping channel at Port Canaveral and some of the near-shore wrecks and reefs off Cocoa Beach are places that we take our anglers can target them. These fish look like speckled trout but have dashes instead of spots on their sides. They prefer to suspend 5 to 10-feet above the bottom on most days, and live shrimp or soft plastic jig tails can be very effective offerings when they are schooled up. If this winter is warmer than usual we may also target tripletail near floating debris or buoys in the area known as the Canaveral Bight which is located just north of the Cocoa Beach area.
INDIAN, BANANA and MOSQUITO LAGOONS
Deeper section in these bodies of water are going to be the best areas to target speckled trout, redfish, and black drum. Residential canals, dredge holes, and areas near causeway bridges that span this lagoon are fantastic places to search for these fish as well. Redfish will also seek refuge from cold temps in the deeper areas, but usually move right back out onto the flats once the sun start to warm them after each frontal passage. Cut baits, live shrimp, and small cast-able lures generally work on these shallow water reds. If the weather is warmer this year than what we normally get in February, anglers should find the trout and redfish on the flats on most days willing to strike jigs and topwater plugs.
Captain Justin Ross and I have quite a few days available this month for anyone wanting to get out of the winter snow, and come to sunny Florida to fish in the Orlando or Cocoa Beach areas with us.
Until next time…..Let’s go catch your next memory!
